A 'measley' fabric book flies to the US

Hi all,

Yes, me again, ..... at long last.

A couple of years ago, my blogger/FB friend Jennifer Coyne Qudeen posted about some spotty rust dyed fabric she had made. She didn't like the 'measle' spots. I said I really liked them, so she generously sent me the whole piece of fabric - all the way to Oz-  for me to play with.

Of course I procrastinated for over a year, but eventually made some delicious cushion covers to go on my new couch. I didn't want to use up all the fabric as there is still a garment [or part there of] waiting in the wings, so I backed the cushions with some lovely earthy organic fabric I picked up on my last trip to Japan.

The story continues.....My friends Barry and Fiona were heading to New York for December, and catching up with Jennifer, so I got my act together and made a lovely fabric book for her as a 'thank you'.
The book started with various ways to enhance the spotty and circular designs,
but time was against me, so a few other designs crept in...

and then some 'pages' were a delight just as they were....
Here is the completed book, pages stitched together and bound over satay sticks, then stitched through drilled driftwood with feature wooden beads.

This lovey running stitch on black was part of the card Jennifer sent me with the fabric.

I keep all my gorgeous wabi sabi fabric scraps, so many of them became a cover for the book,

...which wrapped around making a lovely little book bundle.

...and last but not least, my cushion covers which I love SO much.

Thanks Jennifer, Barry and Fiona for facilitating these lovely connections.

GIVE AWAY TIME

Time for another GIVE AWAY -
2 celebrations - we are mid way through the year, and more importantly, I have reached the 100 followers mark.
I had always planned to have a GIVE AWAY when I reached 100, but I missed the moment because it happened when I was away. With no urgency, I decided to make something special.
Lots of people fell in love with my little waxed silk book, so I have made another for the give away. It was a lovely feeling, sitting quietly making a small fabric book from dyed silk given to me by Fiona which she got from Lisa at Mud Hound Studio [Baltimore]. Knowing that the book would leave me and go to one of my blog followers was a special feeling. I just love these around the world connections.
The book is about 9cm x 14cm, made from strips of silk sewn together with a black cotton 'cover' with a bit of discharge dying on the back [fancy name for bleaching].
I gave the pages a light encaustic [wax] finish to stiffen the pages slightly - ironed on, then washed out again. A black painted piece of driftwood acts as a decorative spine.
If you would like to be in the draw for the silk book, just leave a comment below where it says 'Post a comment'. If you don't have an ID, leave a comment as 'Anonymous' but please leave your name and email so I can contact you if you win. I will draw the winner next Sunday, 6pm EST, so you have a week to post a comment.
Good luck, everyone.

FABRIC BOOK of Life Drawings - revisited

I posted on my life drawing book made from fabric on March 11th, 2010. My lovely new blogger friend, Leslie Avon Miller of Textures, Shapes and Colours, featured my book and my life drawing collage exchange works in her blog on Monday, June 28th. Thanks to Leslie, my 'Followers' have doubled over the past couple of weeks. Don't you just love this blogging network?
Anyway, many of the comments at the bottom of her post about me referred to wanting to turn the pages of my book, so I have done the next best thing. I have made a 'Picasa' slide show of me turning the pages - not quite the same thing, but hopefully near enough. Go to FABRIC BOOK to see the slide show.

Another finished project

It has mostly been a week of paperwork and boring stuff, so nothing much creatively has happened, 'tho I did manage to finish another 'book' - the fabric one with all the samples I did in the Dorothy Caldwell workshop in Ballarat last April.
...with the unresolved cover,
...I added another bit of black fabric to the red and a couple of long straps,
...then rolled the book and rolled the cover around, tying the straps in a bow.
It's a strange way to present a book, but it's only for me, so hey - I'm free to say 'who cares?!?!'
